Ecuador Earthquake 2016

One type of VGI (Volunteer Geographic Information) that I found was on the Earthquake in Ecuador. The project started at the beginning of April of 2016 and ended in the beginning of June in 2016. It was the strongest earthquake that had hit Ecuador in decades. The earthquake had a magnitude of 7.8 with over 500 aftershocks. Buildings and bridges were smashed along the pacific coast leaving the city of Ecuador in a state of panic. Thanks to VGI organizations as well as ordinary people were able to help Ecuador by creating a crisis map. They were mapping where the damage had occurred as well as temporary shelters for the people whose homes were turned into rubbish. In just seven days, 2,300 volunteer mappers had made close to 3 million map changes.

Hurricane Harvey

Hurricane Harvey happened on August 26, 2017 in Texas. It was a Category 4 storm and a Level 7 disaster. This was the most powerful hurricane to hit the US in ten years. In response to this horrible disaster google decided to create a crisis map. They included information from many social medias. They also created a place that people could donate to those affected by the storm. They included hazard reports, closed roads, accidents and construction work. Google funded this research as well as made a $250,000 donation to the efforts in helping those 100,000 people that were affected by the hurricane. The bulk of this donation went to the American Red Cross
